NSU Core Value: Student Centered

I believe that the personal growth and development of the student comes first, and advising is an integral part of this process. Understanding the whole student, their desires, aspirations, and motivations helps me help them. When I understand the whole person I can help guide them in the decision-making process for setting goals. This goes beyond their academic pursuits to incorporate their life. Next to Thanksgiving my favorite day of the year is commencement since my students are no longer students, they are graduates.

More About Me

Over ten years of experience at NSU, five of which have been in academic advising. I am also a PADI and NAUI certified Scuba instructor and a staff member with the NSU Academic Dive Program. I have been diving since 1980 and became an instructor in 1985. I love the ocean and the water. I imagine that being born in Hawaii has something to do with it.

From 1992 to 2002 I was served my country in the Pennsylvania ARMY National Guard. My unit was Troop A 1/104 Cavalry. My military career gave me a deep appreciation for the hierarchy of command and service. I was activated for two blizzards that struck the Philadelphia region during that time and assisted in recuing medically dependent citizens and delivering them hospitals for urgent care.

My passions extend beyond the university engaging in historical re-enacting in the maritime trade. I enjoy educating adults and children alike in historical events from the 1600’s to the 1800’s; specifically the significance of pirates and privateers to the founding of the United States.
