I am very pleased to be able to write my first Dean’s Message. Being Dean of the H. Wayne Huizinga College of Business and Entrepreneurship (HCBE) is the highlight of my 30-year academic career. I consider everything I have done up to this point to be a rehearsal for this position. My years at UConn as a faculty member and administrator and over seven years as Dean at Long Island University and Fairleigh Dickinson University have prepared me to leverage my experiences to take full advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that await me at NSU.
When I interviewed for this position and met people across campus and within HCBE, what struck me first was the warmth of everyone’s welcome. Next, what struck me was how comprehensive the University is with all the extensive programs offered across 18 colleges. To me, this is like being in a candy store. There are so many possibilities for HCBE to be distinctive, but to also be a partner with other NSU colleges and programs to enhance their distinctiveness as well.
My goals for HCBE are to work with my colleagues to make our programs pre-eminent, to collaborate in meaningful partnerships across campus, to increase both undergraduate and graduate enrollment, and to raise resources that will be used for scholarships and endowments that will help us invest in our future.
I pledge to focus on student success, particularly career placement and experiential learning, by working with the business community to ensure that we are developing the talent that employers need. We will be cutting edge in terms of technology by meaningfully incorporating virtual and augmented reality into the classroom and providing students with the skills to adapt to changes in the work force so that they can continually re-invent themselves as situations unfold.
Finally, I pledge to meaningfully engage alumni and the business community to help us achieve our goals. HCBE and NSU have impacted many lives. That impact should not stop when degrees are conferred. And, as alumni have been impacted by us, we need to ensure that they can pay forward with time and resources to help others – our current and future students – get a high-quality education that leads to fulfilling careers and lives.
Please consider reaching out to me to let me know how you can help.
